Extraordinary and ancient Finnish ticking made of a very rustic and thick linen (linen tow) At the time, mattresses were made with two longitudinal pieces of fabric sewn by hand lengthwise. This is one of those pieces woven in twill on a 63 cm wide handloom. With stripes of different shades of gray and off-white.
ROSARIO SAYS: "This textile is from the early 1900s. As seen in the Collection of the Seurasaari Open Air Museum (Finland). I think it is an elegant piece because of the simplicity of the colors and the softness they have achieved from the linen. A wonderful treasure!
The term "tow" refers to the shorter flax fibers left over from the spinning process. Yarns and fabrics made from tow fibres are usually thicker and more rustic in nature.
